2009 Lifetime Achievment Award

Eva Bio

From The Chronicles July/Aug/Sept 2009:

Eva Cernik,w ell known for her sizzling Turkish Oriental dance style, has danced since her childhood in Brazil. At age nineteen she discovered Oriental Dance through Anahid Sofian in New York City and later worked in several of the night clubs there. Anahid's influence, Eva's Eastern European heritage, and exclusive travels to Turkey attracted her to practice the Turkish style of Oriental Dance. Eva also incorporates techiques learned while working with "The Erdogans" Modern Turkish Oryantal dance troupe all over Spain and Baghdad, and as a soloist with the Samir Sabri troupe in Cairo.

Her experiences are not limited to the nightclubs of Cairo and Istanbul, they extend to the villages where Ghawazi, Romani, and "folk" dance to traditional acoustic music performed at festivals, weddings, and in their homes. These were some of her learning venues. Fourteen years of intensive Sufic training also had its influence on Eva's innovative and mesmerizing performances.

In 1997, Eva was voted Innovative Dancer of the Year by the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (IAMED.) In 2002 she was voted "favorite interpretive artist" by Zaghreet Magazine. Eva was Habibi Magazine's "Cover Girl" in 1987, and was the the cover story for Belly Dancer Magazine's January 2007 issue. In 2009 she was awarded Bellydancer of the Universe Comepetition's 2009 Lifetime Acheivement Award.

What Belly Dancing Means to Me

By Eva Cernik

It is as ancient as human bodies, as ancient as real music. As long as people have moved their bodies with pure submission to music that emerges from the soul, a very natural dance appeared, and that is the "belly dance".

Coming from the belly implies the source of life-both from the wombs of mothers and from the Hara. Though this dance is complete and beautiful only when it comes from the balance of body, emotion and intelligence, it is named after the body because that is what we most easily see and can identify. I can even go so far as to say that the dance exists apart from music, because movement in silence is also beautiful. And, in a very esoteric way,

I can step further back and say that it exists apart from the body. The natural pathways of movement exist as geometry exists apart from building materials. As we learn to dance, we synchronize with these natural pathways. We plug into natural laws; we remove clumsy blocks in our bodies.

"Belly dance gives birth to all dance: it comes from the source of life, it demonstrates the creation of life, it is an embodiment of the soul."
